Bushido Karate Club Douglas: Opinions
Fantastic experience: My child enjoys karate very much. She has been attending training here for a number of years now. It has increased her confidence and resilience. She has so far graded to green belt and she says that Aaron is an excellent Sensei.
Fantastic experience: A fantastic karate club with a supportive and friendly atmosphere. Sensei is very knowledgeable and patient, and the classes are well organised. I have really enjoyed my experience so far.
Fantastic experience: Highly recommend bushido karate club Douglas. They promote respect and pride in their classes offering a personal approach to their students. My daughter is neurodivergent and they have gone out of their way to accommodate her in areas she may need support. Great team with great communication
Fantastic experience: I have trained with Bushido Karate Club in both Cork locations (Douglas & Carrigtwohill) for 6 years. The club has a very positive, disciplined, and welcoming atmosphere. Sensei Aaron teaches students of all ages, where the emphasis is on respect, confidence, and personal growth. I have changed so much since starting with this club. I feel stronger - physically and mentally - and more assertive. In saying that, I have had some physical issues following a car accident and Sensei Aaron has been so supportive. Always encouraging me to continue when I have felt like giving up, helping me to adjust my training so that I am still learning and participating. In terms of younger students, the Club is so welcoming. Training is disciplined, which is important for young people, but it is friendly, positive and encouraging. Bushido students develop confidence, focus, discipline, and respect as this is a traditional Shotokan Karate club. Ultimately this club feels like family to me and I highly recommend that anyone considering joining, should.
Fantastic experience: Very well organized by Aaron and team. Definetely recommend.
Fantastic experience: My son loves this club. He's grown in confidence and loves the discipline, support and friends he's made here. He started very young but this club welcomes all ages. The sense of community and commitment is something I value from Aaron (sensei). Shout out to Mark (sensei) and Kieran (junior sensei) also who have supported my son to earn his 3rd brown belt recently. If you are thinking of taking up karate, I would recommend Bushido Douglas. Aaron also has a club in Carrigtwohill. 5⭐
Negative experience: PLEASE PAY ATTENTION FOR ANY PERSON THINKING OF TAKING THEIR CHILD TO THIS ‘SO CALLED’ Karate instructor (Aaron Keneally) I brought my 6 year daughter for her first lesson tonight at the Douglas ICA hall, and she didn’t have a karate suit due to a misunderstanding about starting dates. Upon arrival, we realised that every other child had a karate suit so understandably she held back because she was anxious at not having one. Aaron, the ‘lovely & understanding’ so called instructor/owner came out to the entrance and in the most condescending tone said to my little girl, ‘oh she must be very shy and looks like she is about to burst into tears, maybe another time’ and then proceeded to close the door on us. I was lost for words when my daughter said to me ‘Daddy, why was that man so mean’. We both felt embarrassed and degraded and i would strongly advise any parent to look elsewhere and avoid a situation like this.
We are very sorry to read this review, as we always want every parent and child to feel welcome. Since 2010, we have taught hundreds of students and have never received a negative review. In our standard invitation to a trial class, it clearly states: ‘DRESS CODE: Wear tracksuit bottoms and a comfortable T-shirt that won’t restrict movement.’ There has never been a requirement for a karate suit at a first lesson.
On this occasion, however, your daughter arrived looking very shy, withdrawn, and close to tears. She would not make eye contact with me or even look towards the class. In those circumstances, it would not have been right to try to make her participate. Out of compassion, and in line with safeguarding procedures, I gently suggested it might be better to return another time when she felt more comfortable. We would never force a child to participate against their will, as their well-being must always come first.
We also encourage parents to raise any concerns directly with us, as this allows us to respond openly and constructively. Posting a negative review without that conversation does not reflect the care and effort we put into creating a safe and supportive environment for all our students.
Our priority has always been, and will continue to be, the welfare and positive experience of every child who attends our classes.
Fantastic experience: Good
