The Killeshin Hotel

Negative experience: While using the zest leisure centre, which is attached to the hotel, on more than one occasion, I’ve witnessed the female staff enter the male changing room to clean/mop the floors. (Takes approximate 20mins to clean) I find this in-appropriate for obvious reasons. There’s no way a male would be aloud to enter a female dressing room so I don’t the how opposite is acceptable.

Positive experience: Stayed for a night recently. Rooms are fine, reception area quite pleasant, corridors are tired, swimming pool and changing areas very tatty and in need of some upgrading. Staff were mixed. Some were very friendly, others not so. My wife commented that we felt like we were an inconvenience to them. Upon arrival we were told to book a table immediately if we wanted to eat there. We went to the bar and were told it was full. The server disappeared and came back from the restaurant to say they would squeeze us in there. We provisionally booked in and said we would let them know. I went down a short time later to cancel and was told there was plenty of room in the bar if we wanted to eat there. We went out instead. Breakfast was the saving grace. Nice staff and a decent selection of food, all freshly cooked. Overall difficult to recommend.

Fantastic experience: We decided to treat ourselves as it was our wedding anniversary and we visited the bar for a meal. The service was spot on. The good lady had Garlic mushrooms for starters and I had Seafood Chowder which was delicious. For mains We had Chicken Korma and Steak Sandwich. The only minus was that the steak was very fatty and left my wife thinking she should have stuck with her first choice of roast beef as it looked very good as it was served up to the table across from us. Normally desert is skipped but on this occasion it was included. We had Mango and passion fruit Cheescake and Apple pie which is always my go to desert. The atmosphere was lovely and the bar was really busy. The total bill was €89 and we felt that this was good value for three courses and two drinks for two people. The staff were lovely and very helpful. All in all we had a wonderful evening.

Negative experience: Killeshin Hotel – Disappointing Stay After Paris Trip We stayed at the Killeshin Hotel for a one-night stopover after returning from Paris. Check-in was straightforward, and the receptionist was friendly when providing our room keys. Unfortunately, the positive first impression ended there. Upon entering the room, we noticed that the bins had not been emptied — a surprising oversight for a hotel marketed as four-star. Later, when attempting to run a bath, it took approximately 40 minutes to fill due to extremely slow water pressure. The TV remote was also nearly unresponsive, forcing me to use a phone app to control it. Ac fan speed was lacking which made the room very hot and uncomfortable. Our room was located directly across from the elevator, and we experienced frequent noise from other guests coming and going throughout the evening. As we had checked in at 10:35 PM after a long day of travel, we decided to tolerate the issues until morning rather than contacting the front desk late at night and risking the inconvenience of moving rooms. The next morning, we raised these concerns with the receptionist, who referred us to a manager named Margaret. She did not introduce herself or ask our names, instead addressing me by name from the booking — which felt impersonal and unprofessional. After reviewing the photos and videos I provided, her response was that we “should have called the front desk” so the night manager could address the issues. I explained that, given the late check-in and our exhaustion from traveling, we expected the room to meet the promised four-star standard without needing intervention. Margaret offered us breakfast, which we declined as we were pressed for time, and then offered coffee, which we also declined. The offers felt more like an attempt to brush off the complaint than to genuinely resolve it. Her closing remark — “Your next stay will be better” — came across as dismissive and lacking accountability. A guest should not have to anticipate flaws in the room Nor should they be told what they should have done differently! Overall, the stay fell well short of the quality and service expected from a four-star hotel, especially considering the rate charged

Positive experience: Stayed for a night away lastnight, The staff was really friendly, The portion size in the bar was a bit small , got the ribs the amount of ribs was small. The leisure centre is a bit outdated to be honest as in old fashioned jacuzzi and steam room. Couldn't fault the staff they were so nice

Positive experience: Very friendly staff and easy check-in. But I must make mention that the rooms have no recycling bins. Which means the hotel is not recycling its rubbish. For a hotel to be tossing everything into landfill in this day and age is a disgrace. We are all making more effort and they should too.

Negative experience: Arrived at hotel looked lovely from photos on website, arrived a bit early was told room was not ready yet which was fine. After a bit of time passed room had been ready but when went into the room all I can say is I was really disappointed and disgusted with the dirt of the bed sheets, mirrors, walls, floor and desk. As below photos u can see the stains from tea marks to blood on the floor carpet aswell as sheets that don’t even look like they had been changed or cleaned. I notified reception and the manager had came out to myself and apologised about it and offered me another room which we had taken. The second room took a bit of time to get into but was slightly more cleaner than the first room been in a lot of dust on desks not even wiped down. I highly wouldn’t recommend this to anyone as it was my 4 year anniversary with my partner so was trying to book something nice away for 1 night. I’m so glad I didn’t book any longer and I will never book this hotel again

Fantastic experience: My partner and I had our second child recently but needed to be admitted to Portlaoise Hospital for Post-Op checks and tests. Now, my partner is breast feeding, stressed and unwell. Add onto that the horrible food in hospitals and you can imagine how we’re getting on. Then the Killeshin jumps in. My partner asked to order something from there to go as it’s the healthiest and most nutritious option, which I know they don’t do and I told her we’ll try something else. I rang anyway, explained the situation and within 2 minutes, they agreed without any hesitation. I was even told that they’d hold off on making it until I got there to make sure it was as fresh as possible. Arrived, waited 5 minutes and was handed a to-go box with a mountain of food AND a side we didn’t request. Went to pay, and you know what happened next. They refused point blank! The lady on the front desk was phenomenal and the server managed to lighten the mood for a new father who was on edge over his partner being unwell. Owners of Killeshin Hotel. If & when you see this. Fantastic experience: Absolutely 5 star customer service. We thought they were open Christmas Eve and arrived for a Christmas coffee at 11am. Despite being officially closed they made us coffees and found pastries. They served us with a smile and were so kind. Cannot recommend them more.

Negative experience: We stayed here recently, booked 2 rooms and on arrival to our rooms they were absolutely freezing. We immediately called reception, a girl working there came up, arrived at the door with a dimplex heater to plug in, said there was always problems with heating on 2nd an 3rd floor. It took another call to reception as heating still did not work in either of our rooms, one room the vent was so bad and wide open it was blowing the curtains. A guy came up to help who we later realised worked in the bar and he proceeded to put duct tape across the vents on the windows, I was gobsmacked. The room eventually heated up after a long explanation why from the rude guy in reception. The rooms were extremely tired, marks all over the walls, carpets very stained and bleach marks in parts. Bathroom needed a deep clean and the extractor did not work. Cards to the rooms same issue, had to take them to reception again wouldn't open the doors. Breakfast was hectic despite booking, the self service buffet was all confined to a tight corner, utensils not clean, extremely shabby and nothing looked appetising, pancake machine broken, asked twice for tea/coffee for the table. Overall at best a 2 star hotel, it was like Fawlty Towers, I rarely write reviews but after booking 2 rooms both dreadful and at €175 each per room this was beyond disappointing. And to add insult to injury when I came home I saw I was overcharged for an extra kids meal when we ate in the restaurant. Avoid at all costs, this standard is not good enough given what they charge.

Fantastic experience: We stayed here for 3 nights and can't wait to return. It was our first visit and definitely not the last. We arrived to a real Irish hospitality welcome. We were checked in by Deirdre who was both friendly and professional, she got our stay off to a terrific start. Our room was bright, warm, spacious and immaculately clean. It had all the little extra touches that makes your stay memorable. The bar is very inviting and serves great food and an excellent pint of Guinness. Again, first class attentive service. Very clean and very comfortable. Can recommend this bar for great food, drink, service and atmosphere. We really enjoyed the leisure centre and again the staff really couldn't be any more helpful. Breakfast is everything it should be and more. Huge variety of choice and really good food. One of the best breakfasts we've had in any hotel. Again, amazing staff and service. We found the hotel to be well situated for sightseeing and there's some wonderful places to visit. There's also some good shopping and eateries. We had 1 little glitch with our room and when I say management couldn't do enough to sort it out for us, that's an understatement. Kudos to Ciarán, Jonathan and Margaret for the best customer service we have ever encountered! 5 star service at its best. Thank you all so much you know how amazing you were. We look forward to seeing you all again soon. And a final thanks to Deirdre for the best check out experience. We didn't want to leave x

Fantastic experience: What a fantastic hotel, the staff in this place really make it extra. Every member of staff we had any contact with was so pleasant and helpful. We are in the restaurant and the food is amazing and such value for money. The rooms are nice and spacious and lovely and warm. The town is a short drive away from the hotel. The swimming pool and steam room/sauna were a lovely bonus to have and although small my children enjoyed it. I will definitely book another trip

Fantastic experience: We stayed for a one night break and can't recommend enough, the food was excellent, room was spotless clean and very modern. We stayed in an Executive double room, the bed was massive and so comfortable. There was a great atmosphere around the hotel and the guy singing in the bar was good craic too. A special mention to Daniel on reception, he was a lovely guy and made it clear upon check in that if we needed anything during our stay, don't hesitate to contact reception. We will definitely be back again.

Fantastic experience: Myself and my partner stayed here last night, we really enjoyed our stay! Cannot fault anything, the food was absolutely delicious (breakfast& dinner). The room was spotless with beautiful decor as was the rest of the hotel it's beautiful. We loved the warm swimming pool& jacuzzi. Every single staff member we came across was nothing but friendly. Breakfast staff, bar& restaurant staff, leisure centre staff and especially the receptionists. I didn't get her name but the lady on the desk during the day was extremely kind and made sure we got a nice room. Overall our experience was great so we thank you for such a lovely stay.

Fantastic experience: This place is super underrated. It's a diamond undiscovered. I organised a group of 8 families here 2 weeks ago and the feedback was phenomenal. From the reservations ladies (Marta and Simona) to the reception (Deirdre), every accommodating staff during the stay, dining at Dunamaise Suite, bar, lounge area, to the leisure centre, the experience was just wonderful. So good that I am now under pressure from others to book again this February and I think this will be a place we will be returning in many years to come. The food was fabulous and generous portion. The bar atmosphere was great, despite current restrictions. The rooms may not be new and could do with a little upgrading soon but it was clean and very well maintained. For a family hotel, it is not just the location that matters but I think the overall experience particularly by our little ones who, like their eager parents, cannot wait to go back and have a fantastic, memorable time away from home! Thank you Killeshin, you made one weekend during the covid era, a very fun time to remember. My only regret was getting sick that weekend and not able to join!

Fantastic experience: We stayed at the hotel last mont for a Funeral. We arrived pretty late to check in.That wasn’t a problem for the lovely Jean at reception.. She outlined everything about the hotel and was wonderfully friendly.. I liked her instantly. Very helpful and when you have someone who knows there job, it’s less stressful for the guests. Top marks Jean.. The hotel was wonderful and the room was perfect for our stay. My only regret is not trying the pool. Next time we stay , I will try that. We got down for breakfast the following morning to see that Jean was still at reception..Just wondering did she get to bed at all???.. Breakfast was a treat and had everything you needed. Staff were again extremely friendly and efficient.. Well done to all. We will hopefully see you all soon enough. Thank you .

Fantastic experience: We stayed 2 nights, the suite was absolutely massive and georgeous. Some of the staff were a little slow and you had to get their attention to get served. Bar & restaurant food menu want the best and found a nicer place to eat out in. Breakfast was lovely the 1st morning, not as nice on the 2nd morning, may have been a different chef. Overall would recommend it especially if you can book a suite.

Fantastic experience: Had lunch with my family celebrating my Grandsons Communion. 30 people approx. Main menu was excellent as a usual children's menu Service staff and their timing in between course's excellent again.But the food was the winner It's been a long time since I've had a meal of this excellence.100% and more Many Thanks for the experience.

Fantastic experience: Checked in to this hotel unexpected after attending hospital had intended to stay one night but stayed three. Everything from start to finish was fantastic .Rooms were spotless clean plenty of tea and coffee. food I had was fantastic complments to chefs I can also recomend there toastie special in the afternoon i had to have two.breakfast lunch dinner all was was super. And no delays on service. Staff were second to none bar staff floor staff ŕoom staff all so friendly and helpfull . I think it's Derek on reception hope that's right but he seemed to be there all the time so helpfull and cheerfull .kieron the floor manager just so helpfull although he didn't help us win the match. Again bar staff all young people but they went out of there way to chat and make you feel at home and so pleased to serve you . Sean the manager i spoke with had plenty of time to sit and chat and was in no hurry to get away from me even Des the night porter well a very busy man but when i was out for a smoke in the middle of the night he still had time to stop and an chat to me .N ow last but not least Rosie who was in the breakfast room well what can I say she won my heart over she is a phlesant warm hearted hard working and very loving person she listened she smiled she laughed well I can tell you she would brighten up anybody's morning no matter how bad it was. I will be back to stay here sooner than later and would really recommend it to anyone without hesitation thank you all

Fantastic experience: Attended The Cedar Restaurant to celebrate a family occasion Sept 2021. Our group received a lovely warm welcome from the staff, who were consistently attentive and efficient throughout our time there. Could not fault them in any way, and in a time when hospitality staff are had to find, I think it is important to highlight just how great they were. The food was excellent. Adults and children alike were very happy with their meals. A resounding 5

Fantastic experience: Staff nothing was to much trouble. I had a issue with my walk in shower Deirdre and John did their best to fix it. They could not fix.it but they did their best, they asked me back for a. Night free of charge which I gladly accepted

Positive experience: We just stayed 2 nights here. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating, notably so. The girl who served us dinner in the bar went above and beyond trying to ensure our 2 year old was entertained and she was so good with our order. Also the leisure centre staff were super nice and good. I booked this hotel has even when I called to book for receptionist was so lovely. Marks knocked off as I've stayed in nicer rooms and locations, the room was facing onto a loud busy road, and there was a wedding on that could be very clearly heard from our room and woke my husband at one stage. Just something to consider if you need a quiet room ask for one at the back maybe on the second floor...

Fantastic experience: Just returned from a 2 night stay and we could not fault this hotel , the food was absolutely delicious breakfast & dinner , the bar staff were super friendly and accommodating!! Niall was very friendly & attentive. But on a side note every single member of staff greet you no matter where you are in the hotel , it gives off such a good vibe and says a lot about the staff moral. pool & gym great addition to the hotel , over all really enjoyed our stay , room was cleaned after 1st night . Would definitely return & recommendation to stay here.

Fantastic experience: Came here for birthday and had such a lovely experience, staff were so lovely and showed great hospitality. We had a family room with one big bed (king size I think), one twin size bed and another pull out bed the same size. It was a nice size room and fine for just staying one or two nights. The pool was nice, there is a sauna too and jacuzzi (it was drained though). We had dinner in the hotel and I can not recommend the food enough, it was absolutely delicious! We were given big portions which is always a plus and also a complimentary dessert for my birthday. Natalia was our server and she was so lovely. There is a great atmosphere in the hotel and I will definitely be back again.

Fantastic experience: We loved this hotel from start to finish. The minute we walked into this hotel the staff were so welcoming and friendly. I was there to celebrate my 50th Birthday with family. When we checked in we went to the room to put bags away and there was a lovely Birthday plate in the room waiting. It was very thoughtful of the hotel. We had a fantastic meal from starters to the mains. I was stuffed so I couldn't eat desert. But I cannot fault this hotel. It was very well run with the covid going on. Rooms were fab. Fantastic experience: I stayed in The Killeshin for work purposes last night and had a fantastic experience. I ate in the bar and had the Chicken Korma which was absolutely delicious! Natalia was the server and she was brilliant. Offered me her recommendations from the menu and was very knowledgeable. The room was clean and I felt very safe as well as the bed being really comfortable. I would definitely recommend anyone looking for accommodation in Portlaoise.
