Portlaoise Leisure Centre

Negative experience: I have been using Leisure centre for about 3 years, it is notoriously the worst gym in Portlaoise on account of the small space lacking some serious equipment and horrible changing room facilities. I still enjoyed it as the price correlated to the quality/size and was usually quite and had a lovely crowd. When renewing my membership after the remodel the price had sky rocketed only being a few euros cheaper then Midlands which has much better classes, changing rooms, spa discounts, etc. There is an obvious issue with maintaining staff especially in the last few months. Most of the staff inside the gym are lovely but the front desk staff always seem to have a horrible attitude and seem frustrated with the most basic questions. What has driven me to the point of a negative review is there has been a huge influx of children/very young teenagers using the gym. Younger people being there would not be an issue if they werent so disruptive, they are wrestling each other, half of them wearing school uniforms (jeans) leaving phones and other belongings over all the equipment that they’re not using so it cannot be used by other members. If say your using a bench in the dumbbell section theres 5 kids crowding around one on another and they are accidentally sitting on top of you and bumping into you with weights in hand making it impossible to work out. Not to mention the fact they’re constantly hitting, pushing, and pulling at each other around other people who are paying a high price to just clear their head after a long work day. The gym is much too expensive for what it is and to pay that much to not be able to workout because they have no regard for anyone else and staff instead of asking them to mellow down a little are fistbumping them, taking selfies with them and actively encouraging the behaviour. My partner asked the other day who was in charge and the woman who identified herself as so, I asked her this Thursday what time does the gym close at on Saturdays and she said half 5 yet this Saturday was kicked out at 5 because “they’re closed.” They keep repainting the place but no effort to maintain the changing rooms or maintain any sort of gym environment. If I had paid for the month I would simply change gyms but I paid for the year in May and have noticed such a drastic steady decline since then. Extremely disappointing.

Negative experience: Unfortunately, the value for money here is very disappointing. Membership fees are higher than in Switzerland and, based on the local wage index, more than double the relative cost. The opening hours are very limited — there is no real possibility to train before or after work, and at weekends the centre closes already at 16:30. The equipment feels outdated compared to international standards, and staff could benefit from better training and customer service awareness. Overall, the potential of the facility is not being used, which is a pity given the demand in the local community.

Positive experience: Fix the sauna.Don’t rob the people.We pay for the service.

Negative experience: They really need to improve the cleanliness of the facilities, it was really dirty there on a recent Saturday morning visit, and reading over reviews I can see that this is common complaint

Negative experience: I'm going to start with the most important part of this. We entered and paid af half past 12:30. Told we had an hour. We entered the pool, swimming, using the sauna and overall having a good experience. At 13:20 a member of staff told us while we were in the sauna that we had to leave. We were a bit confused but assumed the time flew as we did not see the clock (checked what time it was after). We went to tell this to the other members of our party by the pool. We did not enter. At which point we were aggressively confronted by a blonde female member of staff. Unfortunately I did not get her name. But she proceeded to verbally abuse us, threatening to call the guards and screaming at us. At this point it was 13:26. STILL not an hour of which we paid. We explained this at which point she said she didn't care and to "get out". We were shocked by this. As I'm not sure what gives a likely minimum wage teenage worker the confidence to verbally abuse paying customers. So asked to speak to a manger. A manager Terri then dealt with us. An incredibly patient and pleasant women who did her best to diffuse and listen to us. Going so far as to send the misbehaving lifeguard away. I understand that electric picnic is happening, I understand that the job can be stressful. But there is no excuse for threatening to call the guards on paying customers over your mistake. I hope this employee is punished in some form for this. And maybe she's simply not suited for customer facing work. Overall experience: Positives: - Pool facilities were positive, pool was deep and large, with life guards keeping an eye at all times. - Sauna was good - Price was reasonable Negatives - Thratened by a member of staff (explained at the top) - Changing facilities were dirty.

Negative experience: For such a big community I can’t believe this is the only public pool. The changing rooms are disgusting. Filthy and rubbish, plasters and filth everywhere. Didn’t see one person of staff cleaning anywhere around the pool, in the changing rooms etc I wouldn’t go back for the simple reason it was so filthy it put me off swimming.

Negative experience: I’ve been a regular member at this gym for the past three months. While the equipment and workout options are sufficient, I’m very disappointed with the cleanliness and maintenance of the changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The hygiene is consistently poor — the showers and toilets don’t seem to be properly cleaned, and overall the facilities feel unhygienic. I’ve also noticed broken lockers, faucets, and showers that haven’t been repaired at any point during my membership. In addition, about half of the treadmills have been out of order for over a week due to poor Wi-Fi connectivity. When I asked a staff member about it, I was told that “this just happens when the Wi-Fi isn’t working,” which felt like a very unhelpful response. The gym is already lacking equipment during peak hours — for example, the cable machine is almost always occupied — and the situation gets worse when machines are down. The fitness classes, which are supposed to be included in the membership, haven’t been running regularly for quite some time, if at all. To top it off, cleaning is now being done during opening hours. It’s not ideal to have to wait to use the toilet or changing area while cleaning staff are working — especially around 6:30 p.m. when the gym is crowded. This kind of maintenance should be scheduled outside of peak times or, ideally, before or after opening hours. For the price, I expected much better organization, maintenance, and service.

Negative experience: Absolutely horrific experience from start to finish Staff from reception to lifeguards are incompetent. I checked the timetable the night before to see a private party listed. I rang the pool the following morning to find out about public swimming and was told there wasn't any private party and public swimming was on from 11.30 onwards. We arrived at 1.45 and were told that it was closed until 2.30 because of a private party. Came back at 2.30 and the dressing rooms were filthy. You could smell urine as soon as you walk in. As though the toilets weren't cleaned or swimmers were just peeing in the dressing rooms. Brought my 2 year old to the baby pool and he was enjoying it until the water features came on. They were very strong for a baby pool. He was terrified of them. Took him away from them to wait for them to go off but they didn't. Asked a lifeguard when they would stop and was told in a couple of minutes. They never stopped. To make it worse, staff were not keeping teens and adults out of the baby pool, who were coming in and pressing on the water to direct it towards my child. They had him screaming in fear. I had to shout at one teen because the staff were doing nothing. Had enough and took him out after about 15 minutes. When I left there were only about 2 kids in the pool, the rest were all all adults and teens messing with the water features. NEVER AGAIN

Positive experience: This is a good swiming pool but the dressing rooms have the smell of uriln the swiming instrersrs were a bit mean to my kids but my kids liked it and idk of me and my kids are coming back here

Negative experience: Very unhygienic, floors in changing room where filthy. Smell of urine coming from bathrooms was shocking! Lifeguards going around pool bouncing a ball so not relaxing as the sound of the bounce made me leave :(

Fantastic experience: Very nice space! Big pool with beautiful natural light coming in. The Gym was completely renovated and reopened last week with all new and modern equipment. They also have meeting rooms and football pitches to hire. Most of the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Positive experience: It's nice to have the facility back open although imo there's a lot of wasted machines and unutilisied space upstairs in the gym , there's rowing and dip machines in the back studio as well as an extra legg press that is just sitting there locked up, as well as those slider rigs for working your legs. Information online on Google etc about ope jng and closing times is waaaaay off which doesn't bother me but imagine worming in pl Town om a business trip on a random day of the week and you head down to the gym to get after ( where it says online its open at 6 am )but it's most definitely not lol. I'd be p*****

Fantastic experience: Leasure center was closed which is a nightmare to our community bec everything inside there is what we need hoping for the best soon But the gates were not locked for the grounds so the kids had a great time and the walk was refreshing for me and my friend.

Fantastic experience: The Portlaoise Leisure Centre offers a good blend of facilities. Personally I have been focused on making use of the gym floor, however I have seen several different fitness options. As well as a full stocked cardio/weight gym, here is a studio for dancing/yoga classes, spin classes, and a variety of other uses for the spaces. A personal trainer system is also in place in the leisure centre that provides the opportunity for people that need additional help to progress at their own pace. As well as these, there is a decent sized pool, and great supervision from staff to keep the area safe for all. I would definitely recommend the leisure centre for any activity needs. The price for adult admission to the gym is €7 and €5 for a student. I am not sure about admission to the pool, however I imagine it is comparable.

Super staff oceans of equipment and lots of free classes for members. The big pool is on the cold side. Always clean. It has an astro football pitch out the back it is well maintained but has no dividers between the pitches.
