Negative experience: I only was in the restaurant, food was slow to come but tasty enough. When the waiter came up to ask for our dessert, she took our order and disappeared, we waited for a hour until somebody noticed us sitting there with nothing infront of us, they were quick to rectify the mistake but that damage had been done and my sisters birthday meal was ruined. Amazing food, terrible service

Fantastic experience: I just returned from a night away in the Hillgrove with my son , I decided to treat him before school starts next week as he loves the pool. Well it didn’t disappoint, as soon as we checked in my son was given a goody bag with treats and information on the kids club. We loved the pool, it was big and clean. Our room was very spacious and spotless and even though there was a wedding there was no noise at night. Food very nice, pleasant helpful staff. I didn’t get to try the spa this time but it’s my plan for the next visit.

Negative experience: Hands down the worst gym within 50km. There is absolutely no hygiene in the changing rooms, I have never been fortunate enough to see them remotely clean. I have been a member on and off for a number of years. I am yet to see a fully functioning gym/leisure complex. The steam room has been out of service for months now, the manager advised to use the spa; she didn't even know it was out of service too. The sauna and outdoor jacuzzi work intermittently at best. No matter how many complaints are raised nothing ever changes. It's false advertisement, they hold themselves out to provide facilities and services they simply do not provide. I have requested a refund but have not received a response. Save your money and go to Coral Leisure or the Four Seasons. **UPDATE** Spoke with a manager by the name of Jonathan. Doesn't dispute that hygiene is subpar, or that the gym leisure centre is run poorly. However he was obviously misled by other members of staff given he was under the mistaken belief that facilities were in working order. Avoid this place like it's COVID. In light of the hotel's reply I must add: The hotel has, in my experience, only ever had the lowest standards of hygiene. Toilets left unflushed for hours, fluff from socks all over the floor, and often food wrappers left in lockers for weeks. In relation to interactions with staff, it would be helpful if you weren't rude and abusive, which you were. I distinctly remember asking you to let me finish, to lower your tone and address my complaints without ad hominem garbs. This is borne out by the hostile replies by the hotel to other customers negative reviews on this platform.

Negative experience: Went for a so called spa day, truly awful experience. You've to walk across the public reception room from the dressing room on bare feet and far from the cleanest floors. Jucassi was cold, pool was cold and even the steam room was cold! Not going to call it a 50 minute facial. Never had a one finger facial that just tickled. After telling her for the third time you're tickling me with just feathery stroke circles I gave up and asked her to just finish . I would give this place a miss, can not recommend anything about it at all. Fingers crossed the food isn't as bad as the spa!!!

Fantastic experience: Brilliant place to stay with kids, especially for the price. The kids loved the kids club, unlimited pool time was brilliant and they loved the outside park. Breakfast was also brilliant and I loved my spa visit. We will definitely be staying again

Fantastic experience: Met some family for a light lunch here. The food was great, staff were friendly & they didn’t rush us at all. Good location as it’s only about 2-3 minutes away from town centre by car.

Fantastic experience: We were part of an event held at Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan for Barry McGuigan the service by Liz and the team looking after the guests was first class as was the food. we stayed at the hotel which the team enjoyed. Highly recommend this hotel.

Positive experience: Rooms could be upgraded. However they are very comfortable. The place is a bit dated. Some evidence of damp in the breakfast area. The location is slightly out of town but it is an easy walk to town. Service is good. Some evidence when we were there of oppressive management which can be off-putting. Staff are friendly.

All in the Hillgrove Hotel was definitely worth the visit we had a brilliant mini break here. Thanks to everyone here for a great time.

Positive experience: Very nice hotel rooms are very clean and spacious. The food at the restaurant was superb and was followed with a lovely breakfast the morning after. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Negative experience: Stayed in this 4* hotel last night unfortunately it's not a place we could possibly recommend. When we entered the room it was basically a side room beside a playground and resembled a hostel room. When I approached the reception staff I was met with someone who said they couldn't do anything. I sent an email to the hotel where they said they would reduce the rate by €25. This didn't help matters at all as we were away for a special occasion and the atmosphere wasn't at all what we expected. You will be charged to use spa facilities. The sauna in pool area is broken. The room was small and dirty. With a view onto a wall and a wake up call of a playground directly outside. They attempted to charge us for breakfast to the room, to which I handed back the key cards and left. Extremely disappointed in this hotel as I've previously stayed here a few years back. Clearly standards have dropped dramatically.

Negative experience: I would not recommend this hotel at all, but it’s not like there’s much to choose from for accommodation in Monaghan besides Airbnb. The whole experience was utterly disappointing. I think advertising the hotel as “4 stars” is a stretch. Doors slamming closed at every hour of the night. Kids running up and down the halls. Room service was more work than it should have been for paying a premium. The lack of competence in the staff when asking for information regarding the facilities and for sorting out the excessive noise coming from neighbours. I was in town for work from Canada, and will not be passing along anything positive about the Hillgrove to my colleagues.

Positive experience: Beautiful hotel myself and my partner stay here quite regularly very peaceful great spa, pool area. Rooms are tastefully decorated. Quiet great nights sleep. PK’s bar is a lovely spot for a drink, food is good but was better the last time we visited. Only criticism is the TV in the rooms need to be updated to smart TV so patrons can avail of Netflix or other streaming services basic TV doesn’t cut it in this day and age. Overall a very good base for travelling around Northern Ireland.

Positive experience: The service is great, check in was smooth. I was not impressed with the rooms, it seemed outdated but with a modern toilet. There was a sulfur smell coming from the toilet without a lid. Bed was very comfortable and the room looked OK. The lift is really slow. The atomsphere of the bar and entry way is very nice. The location is close by the town by car and there was a vast parking area in the back. The food was lovely.

Fantastic experience: The Hillgrove Hotel was a wonderful venue, the hotel itself is quite a nice building, spacious, very well equipped for a disabled traveler, the staff are super nice in every part of the hotel: reception, bar, pool, breakfast and restaurant facilities. The rooms are spacious and beds are comfortable. It was great that the swimming pool had a disabled changing room, and so close to the entrance and steps to the pool. Gorgeous food in the restaurant and bar. Really enjoyed our stay

Fantastic experience: Attended a dinner and conference at the Hillgrove. Didn't stay so cannot comment on the rooms, but I can say that the service was superb and the food delicious. Special credit to the waiter who served our table - Jimmy McKenna who was so professional, courteous and helpful.

Fantastic experience: Had a lovely outdoor lunch while waiting for my Covid jab, I ordered a tuna sandwich (oh the regret) it was terrible just tasted disgusting, I feel like a fool cause I said it was 'too fishy' (doh!). What I meant was it tasted as if it had gone off and the corn kernels were the biggest I have ever seen, not appropriate for tuna salad. On to the good parts, they exchanged the icky tuna sandwich for a lovely chicken one, the soup was excellent, just beautiful, the server was nice and helpful even when I called tuna too fishy, I appreciate her professionalism. Looks like it would be a great hotel to stay with small children too.

Fantastic experience: Rooms were clean and tidy, the bathroom was great having both a stand alone shower and a bath. The bed's were comfortable and the staff, including those in PK's bistro & bar were very friendly and helpful.

Fantastic experience: Have been to the hotel twice in the past two weeks! Once for a one night spa trip with my sister and then to meet family, who were staying there, for a meal. It really is the staff who make this hotel. We had an issue with the restaurant meal on the first trip but the staff dealt with it so well we really didn’t mind! I have severe food allergies and my choice from the menu was very limited. On two separate occasions (lunch and then dinner on the second trip) the bar chef made me different dishes to accommodate my allergies. Both were excellent. Spa was spotless and staff great. As a bonus we had the thermal suite to ourselves!

Fantastic experience: From the moment we pulled up at the front door our stay has been wonderful. Staff are very well trained, friendly, and everyone made us feel very welcome. Breakfast was lovely, buffet, which would be my personal preference, and breakfast room spotless. Our bedroom was huge and immaculate. I actually can't fault the hotel at all. Lovely to encounter staff who actually seem to like their jobs, and it shows throughout the hotel. Even though its January, there was even a grounds man out weeding and keeping the front entrance spotless. Well done to all the staff, we will definitely be back !!!!

Fantastic experience: Waiting staff organised for us to take our Sunday lunch outside to shelter of smoking area to eat. It was my brothers birthday and he is vunerable as is my elderly mother so we didn't feel comfortable eating indoors. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating and the meal was lovely. Everyone in our party really enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere.

Fantastic experience: Hotel and staff were lovely excellent food, great leisure centre. Rossmore forest park is about 8 minutes away, great for walking and has a coffee dock.

Fantastic experience: This was our 2nd time staying at the Hillgrove. Staff are very professional and friendly. Breakfast and dinner were both amazing. Everything about our stay was perfect, the suite is beautiful! The outdoor jacuzzi in the Leisure centre was a lovely we extra bonus :)

Fantastic experience: Great experience staying here in November 2021. Had dinner and breakfast in the hotel both days and couldn't fault them. Staff were super helpful. Pool area exceeded expectations and much better than many more expensive hotels I've stayed in. Outdoor hot tub was lovely. Only slight negative is that the room was a bit dated but perfectly clean. Will be back again.

Fantastic experience: Staff are so friendly and the facility is kept really clean. I was nervous about returning after its closure as had one bad experience when it reopened for a while but I am now reassured that its run in a very professional way- with IPC a top priority. Id totally recommend.

Positive experience: Hotel was lovely very clean and kid friendly. We were made to feel very safe too. Sanitizers, etc all made available all around hotel bars etc. Only one thing room service breakfast was not good. It was cold and toast was just warm bread. Other than that we had a great time.

Fantastic experience: We stayed for one night, they handle the covid situation very well with a sit down buffet. We got a 3 course meal on the Saturday and was absolutely delicious, wings are amazing aswell as our main and dessert. Reasonable prices for a hotel. We had a lovely swim was just unfortunate the outdoor jacuzzi and indoor jacuzzi was not available due to covid. Breakfast was not amazing that’s the only bad thing I can say. Service from waiters was outstanding they went above and beyond to make our stay pleasurable.

Fantastic experience: Was at a friend's wedding, we were there with 4 children, Caira and Karen attended our table and they were brilliant with the youngsters, I actually got my dinner hot. The food was lovely and plenty of it. Toilets weren't the cleanest when we arrived but that was sorted out. There's good access for wheel chair or buggies. Would return for a meal at some point

Fantastic experience: Checked in and immediately got a very warm welcome from the staff. The pools and hot tubs are amazing, completely relaxed us before we went to the bistro for our dinner. There, the service was impeccable and the food was just as good! The leisure facilities are fantastic with a broad range of excellent treatments. Would highly recommend for a spa weekend and we will be back!

Fantastic experience: I was visiting the new Combilift plant which was the reason for my stay. The location was only half a mile away from the plant and very easy to get to. The staff were extremely friendly and polite and couldn't do enough for you. The bar area is comfortable and has a nice atmosphere. The room was extremely nice, comfortable double bed and very spacious with a large bathroom which featured a bath and separate shower. There is an ironing board and it in provided in your room if you should need to sort shirts or trousers out before a meeting. Breakfast was very good consisting of your traditional English breakfast and also pastries and cereals. Again the staff were friendly, polite and made you feel very welcomed. Can't fault the hotel at all.
