The nearby River Liffey plays host to the canoe and kayak club while Carton Demense provides opportunities for hiking, biking and golf. The extensive grounds of St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, otherwise known as the south campus, has extensive parklands and walks in beautiful heritage surroundings.
On the north campus, Maynooth University 'Phoenix' Sports Centre boasts a large sports hall (600 sq.m.; one basketball court) with a viewing balcony, small sports hall (300 sq.m.), PE teaching hall (300 sq.m.) with break-out room for theory instruction. The sports halls are the home to the University's basketball, volleyball and badminton clubs and provide a venue for the multiple martial arts and dance sessions.
Integral to the Sports Centre's offerings are three sand-carpet natural turf floodlit playing fields, and a full-sized FIFA-approved 3G synthetic pitch catering for Gaelic games, soccer and rugby.
Available from the beginning of the academic year until May, these are the practice and competition venues for almost all of our indoor sports clubs and the many aerobic dance, martial arts and fitness sessions. Located on the first floor in the Sports Centre extension, the Fitness Centre is kitted with equipment, including 34 cardio-vascular stations (10 treadmills, 7 rowers, 1 stepper, 3 recumbent bikes, 5 upright bikes, 2 spinning bikes an 6 elliptical cross trainers), 17 resistance machines, and a selection of free weights. The fitness centre is staffed at all times and operates on a commercial basis. Fitness Centre opening hours are Monday - Friday 8am to 10pm, Saturday & Sunday 11am to 5pm.
The Weights Room comprising 2 racks of dumbbells, 3 Olympic barbell sets, a 45-degree leg press, along with the necessary benches and pulleys is situated on the ground floor of the Sports Centre. The Sports Hall, Weights Room and Fitness Centre are open from 8am, with activities finishing at 10.00 pm Monday – Friday and on weekends from 11am – 5pm. There is no charge to students for use of the facilities.
Sports massage therapy and injury rehabilitation services are available. University sports teams, scholarship athletes and individuals can avail of in-house sports science qualified therapists.
The Snooker Hall is run and maintained by the University’s Club. The facility has four full-sized snooker tables, including one professional table. It is open from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. and games are charged per half-hour. The Hall is situated in the basement of Rye Hall on the north campus. >
There are five playing fields on the south campus, including Rhetoric (floodlit, suitable for training), Highfield (one GAA, one Soccer), The Pond (one Camogie, one GAA).
There are two sets of changing-rooms on the South Campus: one set is beside the Museum and the other is the Casey Changing Rooms, located between Rhetoric House and Logic House.
Three high quality sand based turf playing fields on the North Campus. There is a soccer, rugby and floodlit GAA pitch. To facilitate club training sessions and internal competitions, there is also a “third generation” floodlit synthetic pitch.

Positive experience: Facilities have recently improved a lot, new equipment such as treadmills and new bikes. Unfortunately is is still very cramped but it's a good gym for what it is

Positive experience: Gym has good facilities, but it's pretty packed these days, a lot of the students don't follow the gym rules, music can be so loud you can't hear what's in you headphones, also a little dirty
