The Royal Hotel: Opinions

Positive experience: I am a member of the hotel gym, as I believe the hotel is still not open to the public, just for refugees or government deals. A pity, coz there is a nice McGettigan's restaurant, but generally empty. Nice gym with mostly welcoming, friendly stuff, good new trainers in the last weeks. I specially like classes with Jose & Paul. They push you, but don't kill you with the workouts It would be good if they turned down the AC, specially in winter. AC sometimes is so high, that my throat feels really bad after a while there. In some classes the AC is blasting over your head. So you are sweating and freezing at the same time, which is ackward. Thus, the class doesn't feel so useful, as you don't probably sweat. Also would be useful if the deep cleaning is done at the beginning or end of the day, instead of the cleaner pouring down toxic bleach when you are showering or getting changed

Fabiana Fá 3 months ago

Negative experience: I just called the hotel to ask about the gym, and a man answered the call. He told me I would have to call another number, and he quickly told me the number. I told him I would write down the number, but he didn't wait and quickly said the number again. When I said I was ready to write it down, he quickly said the number again. I asked him to speak slowly because my English is basic, and he hung up on me.

Positive experience: A big hotel situated at city centre in Bray, Ireland. Easy to reach and locate. There are bus stops directly opposite the hotel. You don’t even need a taxi to get there. Bus numbers 155, 145, 14A and others from Dublin City centre and nearby towns take you there direct. For your wedding reception, birthday parties, silver or golden jubilee celebrations, Royal hotel is a perfect place for you. The staffs are hard working, dedicated and respectful. Neat, clean, quiet and a comfortable Hotel. Superb and reliable WI-FI Service available for every resident 24/7 and it never glitches and neither does it ever go offline. Your Security is guaranteed. Although, it is not a 5 stars Hotel but you will not be disappointed. Recommended.

Negative experience: The Royal Hotel Bray is the worst hotel I have ever been to. The pillows are torn. I lived there for a year and a half. The curtains don't change. The living conditions in the hotel are bad. There are gossipers who turn gossipers on each other.

Negative experience: I am a paid up member of the leisure centre at the Royal Hotel . I recently parked and signed my car on the registration form as I was using the gym. When I returned awhile later my car was clamped. On looking for the documented that I had signed at the start to register my car park, this was shredded. On highlighting what happen, the staff reassured me that this would be sorted out. Its nearly a month ago. After contacting the hotel numerous of times no one has got back to me. It really disappointing as I am customer of the hotel and paid premium prices to be a member and this is how I was treated. I don't think that I will be renewing my gym membership again.

Negative experience: Terrible! I went to look the room and the price at the reception and was attended by a rude man, who was kicking me out of the hotel saying that there was no more vacancy. I never go near this hotel anymore.

Negative experience: It was too quiet . There's no atmosphere in the bar and service stops at 9:00 pm.

Negative experience: If I could give this 0 stars I would. Very disappointed, the pictures of the entrance are misleading. The nice fancy entrance is actually the back. This was a strange Hotel its like they took 2 separate hotels and smushed them together. The back is lovely but the rooms and up stairs area is very outdated. The walls have not been painted in years and there was marks all over them. The bed was a very small double and not comfy. The television was old and small and remote was kept together with tape. Our towels had dried in makeup stains. I know these are only small things but you dont expect them when they advertise themselves as been upmarket and modern in their pictures. My biggest issue is that they charge for parking, it was impossible to find the back entrance anyway as no signs. But I am sorry for any hotel to charge for parking is outrages.

Negative experience: This hotel ruined my wedding night. We got married here in December, had a beautiful reception and went ahead to check into the room. They asked for our covid passes, and we said we only want to stay in the room we won't use the bar and restaurant. They said they have updated their policy and decided now we need a covid pass even for the room. We pleaded with management and asked why they didnt contact us about the change and they said they didn't have our details. We asked them to print our booking info and when they did they saw our email and grabbed the paper and crumbled it up and threw it over the reception. They told us to leave the premises or they would ring the police. We asked for our money back to book a hotel near by and they said no to contact booking.com and leave. We were left on our wedding day standing with bags looking for another hotel in the middle of bray. I can't understand how they lacked one ounce of sympathy for someone on their wedding day. We finally found a hotel with an availability but was quite far so needed to order a taxi and we lost half the night in the process. We are now taking legal action and awaiting for the response. It was highly unprofessional of them for what they did to us and I feel we deserve some justice for it.

Negative experience: We received a gift of an overnight at Christmas from our Friends, my partner booked in January after several emails to Hotel reservations re available dates, they confirmed our booking by email on the 29th of January. We arrived for our stay yesterday to be told that they had no room for us as the Government took over the Hotel for the Ukranian refugees, they didn't bother to send us an email to cancel our booking. Hotel staff said they didn't have any way to contact us but they had my partners email address. Absolutely disgraceful!! We also had to cancel a reservation in a local restaurant, we paid for overnight parking when we arrived and they wouldn't reimburse this money either..Stay well clear of this place

Positive experience: Not one of my better experiences. You'd expect a hot shower to be the minimum requirement, but not here. And a damp smell between the lift and the bedroom. Food was tasty in the bar downstairs with a decent menu and we enjoyed the leisure centre.

Denise O'Callaghan 3 years ago

Negative experience: I wouldn't visit again. Staff were nice except Reception staff were abrupt. Even though we had checked in online we had to do it all again, took 15 minutes! We ordered the special Pizza and Beer but no bottle opener. Bar told us we had to bring down the bottles to be opened then go back up to the room. Outside the bedroom window is an awful mess, meant to be away relaxing but it looked horrible plus one of the rooms was like a boxroom. Food was good in the evening and morning. Wait staff and Accommodation staff were very friendly and efficient. Band on that evening were good too. Pool was nice but they only had 3 towels left so we were told to share between 4 of us, why they could not ask the hotel to drop more down I don't know!

Negative experience: The worst hotel in all bray! The staff is super unpleasant they ask you for the covid passport also to be in the room when it is not mandatory! Negative experience: Receptionist was slightly rude because i didnt have passport with me. My partner had hers and we showed covid certs but was not letting me stay and was happy that i find somewhere else to stay until his manager or owner asked him to check my bankcard which i offered already. if manager didnt allow this i would have gone home on stephensday even thou my whole family and partner was with me...disappointing. Wont stay again Dinner was nice. Door to bedroom wouldnt close properly and had to be slammed to shut it. vending machines wouldnt work so if you aet early and wanted a late snack you wouldnt be able to access anything. there was no access too drinking water or snacks.

Negative experience: I do not recommend this Hotel at all. The installations are very very old, not as vintage more like old and ugly. We paid over 200€ for a night (for two). The room was horrible, spacious but very ugly and the views were to an inside patio... Issues with hot water we couldn't have hot showers whatsoever. And as well issues with the hitting, you have no control over it, there is a timed system where is turned on and off automatically. You as well will find random spare furniture around the building. After speaking to the manager his solution was discounts for THE FUTURE... Honestly save your money.. We feel ripped off after our stay.

Positive experience: Any seasoned traveler can spot a hotel that the owners are siphoning money out of without investing any back in, there's a lack of maintenance here that I expect they'll blame on covid but it goes far further back than 2020. We arrived early (13:30) to check-in and were told, literally, to go away and come back at 15:00, which is fair, but rude, they did let us leave our bags though, which was great. Our en-suite had a non-functioning extract fan which meant it stayed damp all the time and the equipotential bonding under the sink had never been connected, the shower provides hot water after a 10 minute delay, but at low pressure. The duvet and pillows are the kind supplied in emergency shelters, though the covers are nice enough, and perfectly clean. Carpets throughout are beyond faded, and lumpy in the corridors. Breakfast was meaty, and the same tongs were used to serve rashers and mushrooms, not great if you're a vegetarian, tea was delicious and plentiful, staff were helpful and genuinely friendly. Bar staff are peculiar about the seating, we asked if we could sit in the library section twice and were told it was reserved, only to see it remain empty until the end of the night. *tip; if you've made the effort to make one bit of your bar look cool, you should let people sit in it, they will take photos and post them. I will suspend my horror at the absence of a residents bar, but to hear them call last orders at 22:30 on a Saturday night was jarring. There is a sauna and steam room, they are closed. Location is excellent for Bré and dart to city. Overall verdict: Perfect for a couple that want to get nostalgic about their trip to central Russia in 2002.

Fantastic experience: Was given a voucher to stay here for a night as a Christmas present. Reading reviews I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm glad I went. My husband and I had a fantastic time. You have the hotel, then the leisure centre and the pub called mcgettigans. The hotel is lovely, very quaint, rooms are on the small side but spotless and the bed is so comfy. The bathroom is small but has a bath and shower, a pull out mirror for when your shaving or putting on make up. If you want hairdryer or an ironing board you can request these. A fifty euro deposit is secured against any damages but if all is ok with your room you will get it back . The food is amazing and you have a choice of eating in the restaurant or getting bar grub. Breakfast was included in my stay and there was a good choice, fruit , cakes, hot food and gluten free bread and cereals. Mcgettigans bar is outstanding, the decor is fabulous and the staff are very welcoming. The drinks are reasonably priced and the music is great. Have to say the craic was ninty and I would definitely go again. Even if you are just driving through Bray, I would definitely recommend stopping off at mcgettigans and getting a bite to eat. There is a car park which is five euro for the night if your a hotel guest or you can pay by the hour if stopping for food.

Negative experience: Room was small, Staff were not friendly (excluding bar and leisure staff), Flies in the room, no late checkout, Staff were never at reception when needed,. Overall I would not recommend.

Negative experience: I had a horrible experience with them, the room was not as pictures showed. The room was dirty brown stains in the bath. It looked like the room had already been in triple room was extremely small. I asked to change room and they showed me a worse one! They told me I can get a refund if I’d like to go home. Now I’m being told I can’t get a refund. They are not being helpful Atal and I find them extremely rude! Has turned me off hotel stays completely so unhygienic! I hope no one makes the same mistake I did and choose this property.

Ciara Mc H 4 years ago

Negative experience: 1. Staff were never at reception and very hard to contact from the room. 2. Many flys in the room. 3. Pool was over booked to many people. for pool size during covid restrictions. 4. Late checkout unavailable. 5. Room was tiny very difficult to move around with 2 people should be a 1 person room. 6.Hotel staff were not very nice no welcome or even a smile at check in or during stay and same again at check out. On the other hand the bar and leisure centre staff were attentive helpful and very pleasant to speak to which is why I'm give 2 stars and not 1. Overall I dont recommend staying considering the price and hotel service.

Positive experience: Hotel was lovely, location was great too and the staff were lovely. Interior was very dated and our rooms view was a concrete wall which blocked out a lot of the natural light. There was also no features on the wall, no pictures/art etc. We took advantage of the pool and it was lovely and clean too. The bar and restaurant was also really nice with the staff really helpful and friendly and the food lovely, piping hot and a good range to choose from

Fantastic experience: Excellent 3 night stay in August. We were slightly anxious checking in after some reviews of the rooms but were happy with our large room. It was reasonably quiet (end of corridor and upper floor) but wall are thin - not unusual for hotels. The hotel itself has that old feed of a seaside hotel in the accommodation area with a modern bar/reception/restaurant. Breakfast was good. Staff were friendly. Would stay again.

Negative experience: IV stayed in this hotel before about a year ago and had a lovely stay.our room was on the 1st floor.I stayed here again on Tuesday night our room on the 4th floor was very small and dated. The curtain's were hanging off the rails the bathroom was so small you could barely sit on the toilet. ceiling needs repainting to cover staining . I had friends staying on the 2nd floor and there room was fine hotel is fine just don't take a room on the 4th floor

Sally Kelly 4 years ago

Positive experience: The downstairs of the hotel is nice bedrooms aren't great could do with upgrading and repainting in corridors and new carpet but beds so comfy and food couldn't fault 1st class staff in restaurant and bar lovely. Negative experience: Booked in to the swimming pool during our stay only to be told by a quite defensive staff member that we didn't have a booking and they were fully booked. Asked us to wait while she booked another family in, asked them for another surname as it wasn't under the first name they gave and had no problems. Was offered a space at 8 but we had booked in for dinner at 8 and was told there was nothing they could do.

James Carty 4 years ago

Negative experience: We booked a dinner and breakfast and paid in full on arrival then on both occasions when we went to get the meal they didn't have our booking n we were made stand at the entrance till they had to go to reception to sort it out. Negative experience: Very disappointed with the hotel. On the first day a 2nd family had access to the same room and walked in when I was taking a shower, I have reported this to the reception staff and was told " things like that happen". Never in my life in a different hotel a situation like this happened. The same evening after coming back to the hotel room my card access was denied. I will not book a stay here again.

Fantastic experience: I have just returned from a short stay at The Royal Hotel and very rarely write a review. But our stay at The Royal Hotel was such a lovely experience being our first one out since the pandemic! All the staff at The Royal were very helpful and friendly particularly the manager himself and the reception staff. We had two rooms which were at opposite ends of the hotel (our own fault for changing a room at the last minute). One room was quite noisy as it was next to the traffic lights on the main road but we were okay with this. The other room was much quieter on the internal side of the hotel which was ideal for the two year old in our party. The rooms were clean and adequate and what you would expect from a hotel of this standard. There are no mini fridges in the rooms which meant we had to ask reception staff to store the anti biotic medicine we had for my grand daughter in one of the hotel fridges and with her requiring a dose 4 times a day it was a lot of backwards and forwards. But the reception staff were always extremely pleasant and willing to help. We had a meal in McGettigans and really enjoyed it. The food was very tasty and the staff superb. One waitress went out of her way to find some colouring crayons and pictures to keep my grand children occupied, thank you so much. We also used the leisure centre while we were there and again found the service excellent and the facilities very clean. There was plenty of hand sanitiser stations at the hotel and we felt safe from the virus at all times. I would highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Bray :-)

Vincent Boucard-Mathey 4 years ago

Positive experience: Really friendly and helpful staff, nice pub grub in Hotel's pub, swimming pool is great: that is it for the pros. On the cons side of things. I will just be repeating other reviewers's comments: rooms need updating, view on a wooden wall making the room very dark at all time, takes at least 5 minutes to have hot water running and I believe this is overpriced for what it is really. But was a good enough getaway in-between lockdowns.

Zowie Fanning 4 years ago

Negative experience: Was very disappointed girl on reception was not very welcoming or helpful when they had issues with Google pay yet made us feel like we couldn't pay. The decor in the hotel is very tired looking and needs painting badly. We had dinner in the McGettigans bar as part of our deal we rang our bank to say there were issues with Google pay and they reassured us that it wasn't our account that there was plenty of funds in it and to leave the our card details with the bar and it could be done manually which we explained to a staff member and she told us that it was fine and no problems. When we went to pay the girl serving called the manager and to say he made us feel like we didn't want to pay he wouldn't listen to me as I was a woman trying to speak ruined our whole night. To make things worse we went up to the room where people were very loud where I was woken up numerous times but two tired to ask them to keep quiet. The guy at check out was only delightful they could definitely do with more people like him. Judging by other reviews we are not the only ones to have similar issues as others. Definitely won't be back.

Negative experience: The real Fawlty Towers. Attended as part of a wedding party. On first arrival we encountered confusion at check in, once resolved we went for dinner and food was good but we had wanted dessert but by the time we finally managed to get a member of staff and put in our order a 2nd staff member came and told us that it was too late and the chef had left although there would have been time had they attended sooner. Our gins had mouldy lemon in (but the bar man was accommodating and gave us a free glass each) there was a debacle organising paying the bill then too. The bride and groom were given a twin room with two single beds and the bottle of champagne orders for them for their wedding night was given to them the night before instead. We booked breakfast for 7.30am with the staff member on the evening shift and went down on time in the morning and after waiting until past the time we checked with the reception who informed us that they didn't open for breakfast until 7.45! When we tried to say that we had been booked for 7 30 - the staff member on ignored us and went off into the back! Back in the room and preparing for the wedding and after a knock on the door we went to open it and the door handle came off so we were stuck insidr!!!! Eventually a cleaning staff member came with a screwdriver to fix it. The room and bathroom were dusty, no extra effort put in for the bride and groom. It's not the worst hotel in the world but it's a world away from being good!!!

Negative experience: This is a very dated hotel, the room was not cleaned properly before we went into it and the bathroom was extremely narrow. Staff were grand but this is certainly not worth the three stars it has or the price we paid to stay there.

Negative experience: Beware staying at this hotel and check your bill very closely. Following a series of overcharges my family tried for 3 months to resolve the issue directly with the hotel, to no avail. Multiple emails went unanswered, or the specific queries were ignored. They did not follow their own internal complaints system as per their website- which should have involved escalating to senior management and then to the ombudsman, but despite requesting this repeatedly they did not do so. We wrote repeatedly, including to their General Manager, asking for them to provide receipts for charges made to our room which we did not recognise, some of which included incidentals on dates before we had even checked in to the hotel -or for the leisure centre which we didn’t visit! There are multiple poor reviews for this hotel online unresponded to by the hotel, who do not seem to have a policy of engaging with dissatisfied customers to resolve issues arising from inadequate service. In our case, we had been over charged (including charged twice for the same night) and raised the query at checkout. It was agreed they would not take payment until they could provide signed receipts which they were to send on. They did not do so and instead took payment for the disputed charges from my sisters credit card, which she had explicitly denied authority for them to do, in writing, until they had provided a corrected bill. The charges to her card bore little relation to the figures they were quoting, and when they finally provided copies of receipts for charges we didn’t recognise they included unsigned receipts for incidentals, sometimes without even a room number as well as a charge relating to the Leisure Centre which we never visited and for days before we had checked in. Our family had flown home to Ireland from the UK and US to be with a family member in their final weeks, and ultimately the funeral. We did not need then or since to be treated so poorly. The lack of any attempt by the hotel to address the significant overcharges, and in the 11 months since to provide a refund where there was incontrovertible proof that they had overcharged us on multiple occasions is really shocking. They simply don’t care. Having contacted Bord Failte, we are now taking the case up with the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and The European Consumer Centre.

Negative experience: Would not recommend this place to anybody. carpets weren't hoovered in months. Dust was everywhere. The rooms were tiny it is nothing like the picture. My room wasn't even cleaned before we went in and wasn't dusted in months. Staff were very rude and mean. My husband got locked out of the room twice the doors don't even close properly. We had to check out it was that bad and we got a way better hotel for half the price. 236 euro per room. Not a nice environment. And you can barely get into the bathroom because it is so narrow. Please do not go there. Would not recommend at all. If there was a zero star I would rate it that.

Negative experience: We just left here, we had late check out TIL 1 were out and all by half 9. On our stay there was a sheet we had to get for the parking our deal gave us late check out TIL 1 but if you read the sheet it only gives you TIL 12 so your late checkout isn’t so late. There was a mixup with our groupon code we were told to wait in the bar why she sorted it but no one ever came back in for us so we went out ourselves and then she only started sorting us . Two hours after our problem began we finally got to the room. No hot water in room had to let it run for solid 5 minutes before got Luke warm. One toilet roll. Breakfast was so bad GREASY and cold and you only got a fry as an option. There was such little people there for it to been as bad as it was is shocking . Had to ask for everything we got coffee no milk asked for water no glasses Orange juice warm water served was warm.Scrambled egg and hash brown not on menu but saw them go by on someone’s plate so asked for them hash brown so stale all the plates going back still full of food. We went the bar at 8pm the Friday night girl servers weren’t great at 10:30 I heard one of them call the other girls over as they decided to make a plan together to clear up everyone’s tables and drinks Early because I heard one of them say they wanted to get out early so stop serving people now . The male older servers much more nicer. Bar men lovely and cleaner worked so hard I saw her cleaning plants at one stage. We got the deal of €20 dining credit which wasn’t removed from bill had to go back up with receipt to sort it. Lounge girl said she never heard of groupon deal so had to find someone else. Also pay full price €130 for pool and gym to be closed. Cot was in a room when we walked in which could be quite risky to do when we didn’t ask for it. She then knocked in and asked could I get the cot for her cause it’s in here by mistake and she couldn’t enter the room to get it because of covid so I lugged the cot across the room myself which didn’t make sense cause I’m touching some babies random cot then .Left key in box on way out wouldn’t recommend very disappointed.

Fantastic experience: Lovely hotel really comfortable rooms and great staff. I can highly recommend this hotel to anyone, and would be perfect if it sold papers but that's only a small point as there's plenty of really good shops nearby.

Fantastic experience: Me and my partner stead on the 12th of October for our anniversary and the food and drink wore really nice and also the breakfast was very good. The most we look for is good service and the service was excellent from all staff and the management who just went above and beyond for us. We would recommend this hotel for couples and familys as they have swimming pool also. Thank you Graham
