We take a personal interest in everyone who walks through our doors and we are passionate about helping every single one of our students to fully achieve their potential.
The traditional, and most rewarding way to practise ashtanga yoga. Each student slowly memorises a set series of postures and then moves through the sequence at their own pace. The Mysore-style teacher gives as much or as little help as is required for each individual practitioner.
In these classes, everyone moves through the series together as counted by the teacher. This way of practising builds strength and stamina quickly. If you’re a beginner, it would be better for your first class not to be one of these. Come to a Mysore-style class or an introductory class first.

Ashtanga Yoga Shala Dublin: Opinions
Fantastic experience: Today, I learned what "Ashtango" yoga means lol. I went to this class expecting a vinyasa flow. I came out learning a whole new way to practice yoga! Excellent teacher, great hands-on and instructions. HIghly recommend!
Aw thanks Heather, you were a pleasure to teach :-)
Fantastic experience: A beautiful space and welcoming yoga community in Dublin. Suzanne teaches in an open, inclusive and encouraging way, she’s brilliant. It’s really special to have a dedicated space to practice 6 days a week - Suzanne’s commitment to providing this space (and her commitment to her own practice) is really inspiring. I’m so grateful to be able to practice here and to have found this lovely community. Thank you!!
Thank you so much Aoife
Fantastic experience: Great way to start your day with practice in AYSD if you practicing for years, occasionally or complete novice to Asthanga sequence. Suzanne is gifted, kind and patient teacher.Always enthusiastic and encouraging.Yes,you come! ❤️
Fantastic experience: What an amazing class this morning at 6.30am in Pembroke road, beautiful energy in the new shala it feels like the perfect place to practice ashtanga yoga, grateful for my space in the class ! ..thanks Suzanne ..namaste mary
Fantastic experience: I have gone to a lot of yoga studios in Dublin and London but Suzanne and John’s Shala is my favourite. If you’re looking for yoga beyond ‘the gram’, their experienced and friendly approach to teaching Ashtanga is definitely worth trying. I was definitely intimidated by the idea of Mysore style practice before coming here but Suzanne really put me at ease in the beginning and gave me all of the personalised support I needed to build confidence, strength and flexibility ♀️ Thanks for all of the early mornings Suzanne!
Fantastic experience: Yoga studio that introduced me to Ashtanga Yoga. John and Suzanne are incredibly inspiring people, simply because how much they care for the work that they do and their students. I truly recommend
Fantastic experience: Had my first class here this evening, excellent stuff. Melanie was brilliant. Lovely studio. Suzanne was lovely when dealing with her on the phone. Hope to get back soon
Thanks Ian. Glad you enjoyed your first class.
Fantastic experience: Suzanne and John have created such a great space to practice Ashtanga in the beautiful room on Fitzwilliam Street. Their Mysore classes are fantastic and I would recommend anyone, regardless of what they think their yoga ability, to head over and give it a try!
Thank you for the recommendation Des. You're very kind.
Fantastic experience: I started attending Ashtanga Yoga Shala in February 2022 and don't regret it one bit. A friend who lives away recommended this shala particularly and said the teachers are great, I know nothing about yoga but I totally agree with her now and for a number of reasons. Over the years I have tried a few studios in Dublin and iv noticed some differences in what works for me and what doesn't and what it distills down to for me is feeling welcomed and that any corrections are unique to my body on a particular day. The differences I would summarise as either a yoga studio ran by yoga teachers or yoga studio ran by business people. At the yoga shala, this is the first time iv ever known a yoga teachers name and they know mine. With the run by yoga teachers there is a genuine authenticity and community that iv quickly found here, it's fun, it's sincere and it's genuinely real. Suzanne & John in this shala look for ways to tailor individuals practice and offer a hugely supportive space that I really look forward to visiting. For the first time ever I am pretty sure I will maintain this yoga practice. It's a very real, lived, authentic and sincere experience. I would highly recommend giving this shala a go.
Naoimi, thank you so much for this lovely review. You're very kind. Here's to many years of practice to come :)
Fantastic experience: So far I have only done the online mysore style Ashtanga classes in the evening with John. He is really encouraging and makes you feel that you really will get there some day with the postures you find difficult. Aside from being very encouraging, I have learned loads! Only 5 classes in and I finish each class just wanting to learn more.
Thanks Michelle :)
Fantastic experience: I started the online classes in January as an absolute beginner and haven’t looked back! Suzanne explains the postures very clearly and is very helpful in correcting any problems. She is evidently very knowledgable and experienced, yet always brings a refreshing personality. It has been an absolute life saver for me getting through lockdown and would highly recommend it to anyone considering signing up.
Fantastic experience: Did their online beginners course and as a newbie to yoga let alone Ashtanga I found it brilliant. Paced really well and very inclusive and adaptive to the individual. John was very attentive and personable. Highly recommended
Fantastic experience: I have always wanted to give ashtanga yoga a start and in April 2020 the beginners course couldn't have come at a better time for me. John and Suzanne created a very warm and friendly environment that was hugely encouraging and in no way intimidating which I thoroughly appreciated, as I was definitely not the fittest! The online classes have kept me motivated throughout this pandemic and I am getting so much personal fulfillment from having this practice in my life. I would recommend everyone to give it a go!
Fantastic experience: I signed up for the beginner-level Ashtanga yoga term last October. It was all online via Zoom. I had never done yoga before, aside from some simple yoga-based YouTube workouts, and I was a little unsure as to whether I would be able to learn much as a beginner in a virtual space. Any doubts were put aside in the very first class, where it was clear that our teacher, Suzanne, knew exactly what she was doing. She regularly offered individual advice to each participant in each class, and guided us in our own practice throughout every week. There was a lovely atmosphere in the class, thanks to Suzanne's leadership and expertise. The sequential nature of the lessons, where each week we built upon what we learned in the previous week, meant that the pace of the learning was refreshing without being too challenging. The customer service offered by Suzanne and John is superb. If you are new to yoga and would like to give it a go, I would not hesitate to recommend Ashtanga Yoga Shala Dublin. Their classes are a great investment for your body and mind. Thanks, guys :)
Fantastic experience: I started beginners Ashtanga Yoga during the 1st Lockdown of April 2020. It has been the best thing I ever started. It is tough and a really good form of exercise. I can't believe how quickly I seen progress in my flexibility. I am still taking part in the classes which take place twice a week. Suzanne and John are both amazing at how they run the class and the instructions and feedback they give during the class. I really look forward to the evening why I have yoga and I feel 100 times better after the class. I really can't recommend the class enough, if you are on the fence you should definitely give it a try, you won't regret it.
Thank you for the kind words Sinead. We're delighted that you've stuck at it for almost a whole year now. Well done!
Fantastic experience: 10 years at the Shala..... I know I'm not the only person who thought that I would never last at "this game"!! My first Shavasana (is that even spelt right), well, it was a lot different then! This practice has got me through an awful lot, and it has to be said, continues to carry me through an awful lot - I've never come out of a Yoga class feeling worse than when I started, ever!! I am also very very grateful to have found Ashtanga Yoga and importantly two of the very best teachers you could find, they are both absolutely brilliant. So, thank you very much to Ashtanga Yoga and to two amazing teachers, Suzanne and John xxx
Ah Jane. Thank you so much. It's been such a pleasure to be a small part of your life for the past ten years. Thanks for everything.
Fantastic experience: I have practicing with John and Suzanne for more than two years and I can say that it was a game changer experience. Ashtanga is now with me everywhere I go, part of my life now and I guess forever. John and Suzanne are super teachers and super dedicated : the reference for the Ashtanga community in Ireland. Their shala is welcoming and feels like a big group of friends. If you are a novice, you will yourself comfortable from day zero.
Fantastic experience: I am practicing with John and Suzanne over two years now and feeling so grateful for them being my teachers, and for passing on this beautiful knowledge and practice on me. I started yoga journey with them and always felt safe and supported which is of utmost importance to me. Morning classes with Suzanne are, at least for me, more playful, and afternoon classes with John are more meditative. Both of them encourage students to cultivate their own natural curiosity, authenticity and connection. If you are looking for a traditional Mysore ashtanga yoga classes and supporting, loving and community oriented shala in Dublin you are at the right place :) P.S. to not forget assistants and their lovely adjustments!
Thank you for your lovely words Petar. It has been a pleasure to support you with your yoga practice.
Fantastic experience: I was looking for an Ashtanga teacher for a while, as a beginner, I was only practicing few months at home . I was terrified of my first visit at Mysore class, but absolutely unnecessary :) I felt so welcome, and got little tips when forgot next asanas in the sequence due to stress ;) and those little adjustments and help from Suzanne and another teacher, priceless to me, thank you. Yoga Shala Dublin- I felt this place since first visit, there is something about it. Place itself is lovely too, so bright, could be quite busy, but everyone will find their little spot.
Thank you Aga. I'm so happy you had a good experience as a new student at the shala.
Fantastic experience: I’m relatively new to yoga, and a late starter. I wish I knew about this practice in my 20s. I love the space to practice at my own pace, considering I’m so unpracticed. John and Suzanne, and the other teachers and students are very supportive. I’ve cancelled my gym membership. I’m not a great at yoga, but this is my practice now. Try it out.
Thanks for the review Mark. It's a pleasure to have you at the shala :)
Fantastic experience: Really the best place in Dublin for asthanga yoga, the teacher is gentle and helpful. You definitely shouldn't miss it if you are also a fan of yoga
Thank you Jing. You're very kind :)
Fantastic experience: it is very hard to come by a shala like this. Suzanne and John are exactly what anyone wants starting their ashtanga journey, or anyone that has already started that journey but wants that special teacher to help them reach their full potential. After travelling to India many times to practice I can safely say the experience you get in this shala is just as good if not better. The personal touch and their detailed knowledge is exactly what you need and want from a Mysore class. My only regret is that I don't live closer to practice six days a week with them. an experience worth having.
Thank you so much for the kind words Leah. We're always happy to see you :)
Fantastic experience: A beautiful Yoga studio in the heart of Dublin teaching the traditional Ashtanga method. Suzanne and John are lovely teachers with great experience and vast knowledge. Highly recommended!
Thank you Vivien :)
Fantastic experience: John and Suzanne are two unique yoga instructors, highly tuned to both the ashtanga tradition and also to individual students needs. They have made space for a thriving, friendly and positive community. You'll feel welcome over and over.
Thank you Mícheál :)
Fantastic experience: Can not say enough great things about Suzann and John, Not only they are knowledgable, helpful, and thorough; They are friendly, warm, and a general joy to be around. They know how to adjust you to help you to go deeper in your practice. Since I go there I feel home and always feel welcome. They are empathy, attention to detail, encouragement and a great sense of humour... I highly recommend the Shala for the atmosphere but also for the practice itself ! , thanks a lot for everything !!! x
Fantastic experience: John and Suzanne are the genuine article - two people who truly embody the principles of yoga. Their patient, caring and skilful approach to helping others enjoy the benefits of Ashtanga is what makes them such great teachers. As an aside, they’re also lovely people!
Positive experience: Excellent teaching; really true to the practice! However, I am concerned about the size of the studio. We were packed in so closely together that it became dangerous. I will visit again due to the amazing instruction - but I hope that the owners either find a larger space or limit the class to less people.
Hi Erica, thanks for the review. It was a pleasure to have you at the shala for a few days. We are looking for a bigger shala at the moment and hope to have more space in the next couple of months. The cost of commercial space is sky-rocketing in Dublin city these days but we're going to do our best to provide the best possible experience for our students in a larger premises. See you next time.
Update: You'll be happy to hear that we moved into a new studio in November 2018 which is double the size of the old space, so there's plenty of room to stretch out now. Thanks again for the review. John
Fantastic experience: Have been taught by Suzanne and John for years. Old school style. No BS. Just really sound people teaching yoga as it should be taught. If there is one place you are gonna practice ashtanga in dublin it should be here. Here its done right at the right place.
Fantastic experience: Amazing and dedicated teachers. The truest Ashtangi teachers your going to find in Dublin. Go visit and then you'll see! :)A truly special piece of Mysore brought all the way to our wee little Dublin. Thank you guys for the dedication and support you give us all and staying true to your roots. xx
Fantastic experience: John and Suzanne introduced me to Ashtanga Yoga a few years ago. It was my very first yoga class. Most people who know a little bit about yoga will understand my surprise. This was not the yoga I expected and I loved it from my very first practise. I loved the mysore style classes, such personal help one gets to learn each and ever pose at the right time but most importantly the profound sense of peace and happiness it gave me. Nothing else compares to it. It is the best thing anyone can do for themselves - to find the time in the morning to go to the shala and practise Ashtanga with John and Suzanne. I can't recommend it enough.
Fantastic experience: Went for a single drop-in class as I was only passing through Dublin. Very busy class, I think they need a bigger space to accommodate everyone to be honest. Suzanne was both friendly and firm, exactly what you want in a teacher. I was a bit rusty with my primary series and after being a bit traumatised in Lisbon (made to feel inadequate for not remembering the sequence), wrote it down and brought it with me. Wasn’t needed in the end, as Suzanne managed to keep an eye out and let me know if I’d missed anything. Also had quite a few adjustments that taught me new things. It’s the most expensive class I’ve ever attended at 20€ for Mysore, but I believe it’s a lot less if you buy a pass. Plus, it’s got teachers that are the type of people you’d want to learn from. For both complete beginners and seasoned practitioners I’d say. Would definitely recommend - just get in early to avoid missing a spot.
Fantastic experience: I wasn't a morning person until I started practicing Ashtanga Yoga with Suzanne and John. Now I'm on the mat early every morning before work and honestly, it is my favourite part of the day, no matter how dark or cold the mornings in Dublin are. Over the past two years, the shala became my home away from home and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who is interested in making yoga a part of their lives too. It's a safe place to learn, practice and progress and Suzanne and John are fantastic teachers who teach traditional Ashtanga yoga in the kindest and most honest way. You receive so much 1:1 attention because of the Mysore style setup (I used to do Vinyasa classes before and really missed that) and you never stop learning. Long story short, it's an amazing place and each day I love it more.
Fantastic experience: John and Suzanna are the most down-to-earth, real, friendly, and welcoming owners of a yoga studio that one could as for. It's unpretentious and easy-going. This has been my second living room for the past two years, and I wouldn't replace it for my own.
Fantastic experience: I met Suzanne in 2014. Her meditative approach to the Ashtanga technique got me to come again, her gentle yet firm corrections made me feel being in safe hands. Both John and Suzanne are very approachable and knowledgeable teachers.
Fantastic experience: My favourite shala. John and Suzanne are genuine, warm, friendly teachers and have so much integrity in what they do. I recommend this shala to everyone!
Fantastic experience: I couldn't recommend Suzanne and John more. They have created a warm, welcoming yoga community in AYSD and are dedicated and knowledgeable teachers. The traditional Mysore style of teaching has really allowed me to explore my yoga practice much more deeply and Suzanne and John are always on hand to give keep me motivated. I'm so happy that I found such a great place to practice!
Fantastic experience: A great Yoga community practices here, from beginners who have never attended a class, to experienced practitioners, those who have been away and returned to practice and all those in between, Everyone practices together in one room with two dedicated teachers, and a really strong sense of community is felt, even if you have only been practicing for a short time. This becomes evident really quickly. A rare gem in our sometimescrazy world.
Fantastic experience: Thank you Suzanne and John for the most wonderful safe space you provide for us all to practice Ashtanga yoga. As you know I am a beginner ( in my mid 50's and I am so delighted to have found your Shala!!) . At best I am a weekly practitioner in your studio regardless of this you show me such patience, respect and guidance as if I am was a daily advanced practitioner which I am so grateful for. I came across Ashtanga about two years ago when I was going through a really challenging personal time in my work and I felt I needed strength, flexibility and resilience for the changes that were emerging. I had heard Astanga was the toughest yoga and I felt if I embraced it I would be able to withstand the challenges ahead, which it undoubtedly equipped me for. Thank you so much. Both of you continue to show me at all times nothing but kindness, humility and genuine guidance as I continue to learn this wonderful practice. Thank you for your amazing support, consistency, strength and love you hold for us all. I have no doubt that the recent challenges will be 'a walk in the park' for you two yogis as you lead the way for us all on new and interesting, albeit constantly challenging paths for all our own development. I wish I knew about this practice in my 20's and 30's life as I have no doubt life would have been a bit easier to navigate! With love light and gratitude to you both and the beautiful community you have established. Niamh
Fantastic experience: If you want to experience Mysore style in Dublin I highly recommend Suzanne and John! They are dedicated Ashtanga Yoga teachers, I started as a completely beginner, Suzanne and John helped me a lot to build up and fall in love with everyday yoga practice. They run Yoga Philosophy classes on Saturdays which is a great addition to know more about Yoga.
Fantastic experience: I have been practising with John and Suzanne for two years. During that time I’ve found them both to be incredibly knowledgeable teachers who have a genuine passion for helping everyone develop a yoga practice. On a personal level ashtanga yoga has benefited me personally on multiple levels and I can’t recommend the shala highly enough.
