West Wood Club: Opinions
Fantastic experience: This was our first time visiting the Sandymount branch as we used to go to the Clontarf branch, and we had a great experience! The receptionist, Carla, was super friendly and welcoming. She took the time to introduce us to the massage chair services and provided all the information we needed about the center. Her helpful attitude made a great first impression—looking forward to coming back!
Fantastic experience: The ladies changing rooms are great. The shower cubicles have space for towels that's separated so it doesn't get wet and a shampoo rack. The pool area is very cool although it smelled a bit funny walking in. The gym floor is smaller than other Westwood clubs but it wasn't busy at all so no issue there. It's hard to find your way though as the place is a maze and there are no signs
Negative experience: No parking, no water (except one little fountain which you cannot use a bottle with), change rooms are old and outdated, very minimal choice of weights and machines. To charge €99 a month for this is mind blowing. It is a shame there is no competition in Ireland for gyms because Virgin Active would put Westwood out of business in a matter of months.. great tennis courts which are barely used though!
Negative experience: Out of all the gyms, this is the only one that hasn’t renovated its showers and pool. The recently repaired floor looks like an old, neglected pool. The water feels great, but the place is not very well maintained.
Fantastic experience: Beautiful place
Fantastic experience: Great gym.
Positive experience: On the positive side, the saltwater pool and hydrotherapy jets are fantastic. However, unlike my local branch of West Wood, staff here seemed standoff-ish and rude. This isn’t helped my the amount of passive aggressive notices posted around the facilities. Threats to terminate membership for everything from vandalism to mobile phone use make you feel like a naughty schoolchild and not a grown adult paying some of the highest gym fees in Dublin. Management need to get a grip on the staff culture of this gym, or else the proposed fee raises will be even harder to swallow.
Negative experience: I have been a member for almost two years and have been going to Westwood in Sandymount for a while now, it is getting beyond frustrating as the pool has been closed for over three weeks now. When the pool and spa facilities are operating, they are great but it's seem ridiculous that it is taking so long to get the pool fixed, especially given the high membership fees. The gym is well equipped but if you're not into listening to music on your headphones, it's deadly dull. I have been a member of many gyms globally and the gym in Sandymount has to be the worst for atmosphere. There is music but at an extremely low volume, all you can hear is machines, weights and people panting away, please turn it up for those who don't like to listen to music on headphones, it's like a morgue, it is not inspiring at all. First time I was there, I assumed there was a problem with the speakers, but no, it seems to be the default to work out in near silence I have spoken to a couple of other members, they complained about the same but nothing was done. Westwood in Leopardstown gets it right re music for atmosphere in the gym, why can't Sandymount. As I'm close to Sandymount and don't really get to use other locations, I'm so close to cancelling my membership. It's a shame as with the pool working and some atmosphere in the gym. it would be a cracking place.
Fantastic experience: Great for tennis, but unfortunately 2 missing courts. Gym is great and very well equipped. Great swimming pool and spa.
Negative experience: Requested a length of hose to power wash the tackle box and was met with ridicule.
Negative experience: Tried to ask for my options to try out the gym before purchasing a membership as I have had quite negative experiences before in gyms. Was met with an extremely rude member of staff who did not listen to anything I had to say. Will not be joining. Would not recommend to any nervous gym goers.
Negative experience: Very poor value. The Sandymount facilities are just ok but it's reasonable to expect a far higher standard for €100/mo. The changing rooms are large but dated, the sauna is quite limited, the gym is well equipped but being thr smallest of the WW lot easily becomes crowded. The sheer number of cardio machines is great but they're old and in need of real service (ie. a bare handful of treadmills are actually flat). The weight lifting area is well populated but an absolute mess. Chipped plates and incomplete pairings of dummbells are a genuine annoyance. Parking lot is miniscule. Staff is pleasant on the surface but mostly useless. Unless you're asking them for a spare lock or for gym schedules they'll stare like deer in headlights. I've lodged multiple complaints at reception or with the manager on duty of real problems with no action ever being taken. For ex. there is no warning or label on treadmills that end workouts after a set amount of time (this isn't a fixed amount of time either and seems to be set differently for each treadmill or maybe even workout intensity). HIIT workouts where you're hitting 18kph sprints only for the machine to juat force a stop out of nowhere are a lawsuit waiting to happen. Similarly, staff will do absolutely nothing about cars (multiple!) idling in the parking lot, causing massive congestion issues for cars looking to exit or enter. Just coming into the gym today I saw someone being forced into a 14 point turn. Overall, the worst of the West Wood locations.
Positive experience: Good gym, small car park.
Negative experience: Staff are lovely. Facilities (pool, steam room, toilets) are often unavailable, no communication via email or text messages about facilities being closed. Not enough parking.
Fantastic experience: A high-end gym + pool + overall club. Little expensive but has an outlet on multiple locations that would be okay to attend!
Negative experience: Great facilities, great location, the owners done a great job with the gym,ive been in hospital for 2 months so i froze my €89 pm membership before been admitted until im fit again to use the facilities, westwood sandymount still took the €89 while i was in hospital from my account for the 1st cancelled month but no big deal right, i was let out of hospital for 2 days i called a lovely guy on the even and ask could i come for a swim and he says no problem i set my alarm for 6am the following morning and arrived at the gym and explained my situation and ask can i pay for a day pass and go in for one swim as i really really missed it ,unfortunately the choice of some of the staff has a lot to be desired,ie Daphne the "manager" unfortunately Daphne doesn't have customer service skills let alone any management qualities ,she shut me straight down and said the only way in is to unfreeze my account and give another €89, i complety understand she has a policy to stick to but come on, has she never heard of discretion,im actually shocked, expecially that I also pay for 2 other family members memberships @ €89 each pm ,so basically I have given westwood sandymount at least €2700 this year and I'm out of hospital for 2 day's and they wouldn't let me buy a day pass and let me have a swim, it's seems they throw around free day passes to get new customers but once they have you hooked, forget about it ,shame on you westwood sandymount, and shame on the passive aggressive "manager" Daphne, i have a awful taste in my mouth after that nasty experience, people AVOID AVOID AVOID, there a pleny of gyms around please consider this if thinking of joining, Happy Christmas to everyone and Bahh Humbug to Westwood Gym!
Fantastic experience: Very good!!!
Positive experience: Great gym,Pool,Tennis courts but children arent allowed at this location so the one in leopards town is much better.
Negative experience: Why are most Gyms in Dublin memberships only ? I'd like to have the choice. As a tourist, In Germany, Denmark and Prague I was able to visit bigger gyms with Pools & Spas paying for a day pass only. Because I travel I don't always have the time to be tied to membership payments ? Why does Dublin not to Day visits. Surely those Gyms & Spas are losing out trying to get memebership only. Many of my overseas friends said this is something they dislike about Dublin. Everything Gym and Sap place expects you to be tied down to membership only. It's ridiculous. especially when Ireland's weather is so lousy that you can't go swimming in the beach. if you want more customers. DAY PASSES !
Positive experience: It's a great gym, with plenty of facilities. Due to its pricing, and facilities, I'd consider it to be a luxury gym. You can get other gym memberships for way less money, but it won't be as luxurious. I would recommend the gym for folks that are willing to spend the most money to get a premium gym experience, that who can afford the cost of the gym membership.
Fantastic experience: 5 star gym … I love my everyday routine there.
Fantastic experience: great pool, good overall facilities and friendly staff
Positive experience: It’s falling a part
Negative experience: extremely poor services. only lets Irish residents in even if you want a day pass. No one would do that in america....
Negative experience: Very poor customer service. Was charged 2 months additional membership after cancelling my membership. Brought this error to managements attention and no effort made to rectify this. Pool and spa facilities closed regularly as well.
Positive experience: Perfect place. a lot of space, a lot of exercise equipment, everything is there.
Fantastic experience: It’s the best! When I go in the afternoons the cleaning is magnificent!!!
Negative experience: Nothing of high ending. No class at all! Waste of money
Positive experience: Don’t get me wrong, I love the gym and the staff are helpful and friendly. The gym itself looks elegant and one of the best among different gyms I went to. The hydrotherapy looks enticing and magical but I wonder how often do they change the water because I’ve tested and proven it to myself that my skin irritation comes out every after I swim and after I submerge myself into that hydrotherapy pool. ( Note: I shower and use body soap plus body wash, shampoo and conditioner and dry my skin especially in between toes before and after using their pool). They claim the water comes from the sea but how come it smells like chlorine? One more thing, the water wasn’t heated, it was lukewarm to almost cold water the last time I was there. To add more, i found a used plaster in one of the corner of the pool when I was there, so I really wonder how often does the pool gets clean and the surrounding area. I also wonder if people shower or clean themselves prior to using the pool. Just for everyone’s sake.
Fantastic experience: ❤️
Fantastic experience: Great gym , been a member for a few years. However I think they missed a beat with their latest upgrade, the gravity room. It's never used outside of classes so for a gym that's tight on space, it's a big waste. Would have been better to have a bigger functional space. The gravity room just looks like a marketing gimmick.
Fantastic experience: This is my favourite WW. Perfect mix of everything
Positive experience: Good value off-peak membership. Love the gravity strength classes, salt water pool & sauna
Fantastic experience: I had the most lovely introduction with Swetlana at Westwood gym. She was super approachable, kind, respectful, and interesting. I felt so comfortable that I joined straight away. I love a gym with wonderful staff, it's half the experience honestly. Elegant gym elegant friendly staff- TJ
Positive experience: Nice place, different areas could be signposted a bit better for newbies, but pool/spa area is good and climbing wall decent enough. Gym has everything the standard user needs and in working order.
Fantastic experience: Excellent
Negative experience: People jump into swimming pool straight from sauna. Disgusting. No control over place. This should be stopped... Cancelling my membership
Negative experience: That is absolutely terrible place to go!! Never recommend anyone. They stated they don’t use chlorinated water, but they did. I had a terrible allergic reaction. I tried to contact them, complained, but nothing helped. They don’t care about their customers. I’ll suit them
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyable place Highly recommended
Fantastic experience: Excellent club with fantastic facilities. Great value for money
Fantastic experience: Super
Fantastic experience: This gym is awesome and handy if you live close to Sandymount.
Positive experience: First time in WW Sandymount. I’ll be back!
Fantastic experience: Nice relaxation after hard working day. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: I love Westwood however Clontarf is still closed
Negative experience: Worse parking ever you just distorted my day!
Positive experience: it's good, one of the best westwood locations, however lately jacuzzi doesn't work at all and sauna is cold
Fantastic experience: It's a very nice gym. Has a pool and sauna too. Good price for what you're getting. Nice, clean gym floor and lovely staff.
Fantastic experience: Amazing club!
Fantastic experience: The Best
Fantastic experience: 5 star experience, great equipment and facilities, lovely environment and spotless clean. Highly recommend
Fantastic experience: Excellent facilities. Friendly staff and not overcrowded. 10 outbof 10.
Negative experience: The swimming pool was smelling like a sewer, the small plunge pool smelled like they poured 100 gallons of chlorine on it, the sauna was closed and the steam room not powerful at all! I meant why don’t you close the whole area? What a waste of time! Total Dissatisfaction
Positive experience: Really nice gym With amazing spa
Positive experience: Is worth the price.
Fantastic experience: My gym in Dublin. Good spaces, fun classes, amazing staff and very good soothing sauna and pool.
Positive experience: Giving a 4 overall due to a few issues (cold water sometimes, ladies gym very uninviting, poor parking facilities) BUT the reason I'm writing the review is to talk about the staff; they are 5 star all the way! Nicole at reception and Zach in particular are so unbelievably helpful, friendly and kind. They always make me feel so welcome. Thanks guys!
Negative experience: As mentioned in other comments, the gym is more about pushy sellers than caring about customers. Very disappointed in joining here.
Positive experience: It’s a busy spot and always not enough equipment. Unless you’re coming with kids to keep them busy during your session, stay away from it. It’s mainly a family spot rather than gym or relaxation place. Lately it became a place for not nice people that don’t respect others, that would bring phones in the SPA area and won’t respect any rules whatsoever. Showers are always dirty and cleaning team would start cleaning SPA and showers with power wash just after 8-9, when closing time is 11pm, splashing all over your towels. After 10pm staff will start kicking you out, explaining that they have to start early in the morning, they would turn off the music. Once still training at the machine at 10:30pm a staff member turned off the lights! Also there’s always smell of mould and if you try to train on the bars you will do a good dusting for them! Overall disappointed, not worth the money, extremely busy, full of kids running around and jumping on the machines on the ground floor.
Fantastic experience: Great gym
Negative experience: Rang up to go for free trial with 2 friends, was told no problem to come in , drived 40mins to be told no entry , have to pay 50eu , laughed at ,won’t be going back
Hi Sam, let me look into this. Which club did you visit and when did you visit? Thanks Alan
Negative experience: Travelled an hour to come down for a free trial, got told they could not give me trial due to the distance I travelled very unprofessional, gym smelt funny and was extremely over priced definitely wouldn’t recommend
Hi Michael, when did you visit and which club did you visit?
Negative experience: Administration is a joke
Negative experience: 3 months ago in Sandymount Westwood club, I was going about my own business in the gym and I was verbally abused by another member. When I was in between weights, this member dropped his weights very close to my head. After the next set I got up and he was standing in front of me very confrontational and for the next few minutes he spoke to me very aggressively on how I had taken his machine. The more I said I didn’t know it was his machine the more aggressive he became. I walked off in tears and went to a member of staff in the main reception who said they would follow me up. I waited at the reception upstairs till another member who had witnessed it came over to see if I was ok. We waited another 5 minutes and still no one came up to me. We went back together to the main reception and he said it to the same people and he had to actually tell them they needed to do something. By the time we got back up he had gone. For a club I felt so unprotected. There was not one person on the floor to help me. The club contacted me to say my story was right from what they said on CCTV. I got my money back and have not heard a word since. It’s absolutely appalling no one has ever made contact with me since this happened. I have been unable to go near a gym since and wouldn’t recommend here to anyone.
Positive experience: I like
Negative experience: Sadly I had to leave the gym as I made multiple complaints without response, when I informed management this is the reason I was leaving they told me a manager would contact me if I decide to join again, still no response regarding my complaint. Great potential for a gym and the trainers are amazing would be great if there was better customer service so the problems could be resolved.
Negative experience: First of all for those who consider to becoming a member of Westwood Sandymount. It's small club based on small grounds with small/limited parking available. There is no parking spaces available Almost all the time. 2. Gym floor: in general ok... However, Many machines are outdated and some of them are just 1 of each. 3. Changing room area (women's) Outdated too, along with showers area. There is a lot of hair everywhere...All the time.. Spiders on the cellings and in (private small changing area) 4. Pool and other facilities area. The worst area. It's starting with stairs you go down ... always dirty and again, fully of hair and unpleasant smell. Then that disgusting 100 years old brown double doors... witch are unpleasant even to touch it. So you open that doors...and enter into the pool area...And First what you feel is ...Very unpleasant smell...like in the toilet ...But it's seems nobody from staff or management are care. There is a lot of people who didn't wear a cap or even flip flops... walking around that dirty and hair floor and then enter directly into the pool.. Pool: Along the pool wall, jacuzzi buttons etc...there is a black coats of dirty witch stays there for years ...very very disgusting...on the other side of the pool, people trows their chewing gums and other rubbish...and nobody clean it ...I personally see same rubbish for months...again disgusting... Steam room ... Unpleasant smell again ...(however in steam room should be a smell of essential oils... that's what you have to breath...but instead you breath a dirties (witch wasn't clean for months or even years) after people's sweat etc etc etc...I've seen an person who trowing his nose dirty on the wall and seat. So it's seems that steam room or sauna etc ...are not cleaned every day/regularly basis. It looks like that happens no often then once a year. So, I'm came in to improve my health here but ended to feel dirty after and more than that ...that I may get lots of bacterias/infections.. you even breathing bacterias... As steam doesn't kill all bacteria/fungal/infections...witch growing on the wall, seats, floors etc..I'm thinking to cancel my membership. As instead to be a pleasure...It's disgusting experience.
Positive experience: Nasty smell when I entered pool area a sewage type of smell. Water wasn’t very clean in pools and wearing hat rule was not enforced. Most people didn’t have one on!
Negative experience: Not worth the money..
Fantastic experience: Love sandymount. However disappointed the we are not kept up to date with developments in clontarf. The sauna and steam room have not been open now for over two years. This is not what I paid for.
Fantastic experience: The staff in Westwood in Sandymound always going the extra mile to keep the clients happy. Highly recommend them!
Positive experience: lovely warm pool. a bit dated very relaxing
Fantastic experience: A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!!!!!! such a beautiful pool and wellness area , absolutely unreal
Fantastic experience: Excellent gym.
Fantastic experience: One of the most affordable clubs in Dublin! For being affordable you can't have everything, the gym equipments are a bit old, but they do their job! Staff were all great with us. The place is clean and well kept! Lively for a weekend break at the sauna, different options for relaxing and enjoying time with yourself or a friend. I went with a friend for free, she invited me and I am definitely becoming a member as soon as my membership in my current gym is over!
Positive experience: Place handy ,pool salt water only in Dublin.Staffs are great help.A comfort zone when your body and soul needs rejuvenation.
Fantastic experience: The best unit in the group. Wonderful hydromassage.
Negative experience: Disappointed to sign up for a trial and not get it. After filling in the info, correctly, they said my number was incorrect. It wasn't. I emailed back my number, didn't get a response. I got an automated message saying my trial had started, this was not communicated. I wrote back to ' svetlana' email. No response. I called reception, it didn't answer. Overall the experience was one of trying to fulfil their own processes and didn't really take into account the client journey.i called 3 + times and send 3+ emails and still no responses. I won't be going for a trial or joining. Disappointed to say the least.
Positive experience: We went to its beautiful swimming pool with sea water and yakussy. It also has sauna, turkish bath and relaxing room. Very nice.
Negative experience: Extremely cold gym. super strong air conditioning. It seems that the intention is for you to leave as soon as possible. complaining at reception did nothing. there are certain appliances that you simply cannot use because they are coming out of the air circulation system.
Fantastic experience: Great gym club. Top facilities and locations but it doesnt come cheap
Fantastic experience: Relaxing
Negative experience: 'Luxury' vibe Social Fitness club in which "something is always broken!" A facility which gives you access to gym, pool and some warm sauna rooms - sounds like good 'all in one' value, until you realise, that the conditions leave a lot to be desired, even if offered at an affordable price. Club seems understaffed and mismanaged, with average workout atmosphere and inadequately maintained rusty equipment, poorly air conditioned area with dominant fragrances of sweat and mold. The fact that cool humid air is not warmed (to me it feels like below 17 degrees celsius) leads to poor athletic performance and could potentially result in injury. The pool and Jacuzzi is the best bit as it's a natural underwater spring full of healthy minerals. As for the Sauna and Steam room which are usually overcrowded and only warm enough to keep you warm barefoot - and if you don't sweat, the sauna is a waste of time. This coupled together with members not following Sauna etiquette leads to an unpleasant experience. The staff are friendly, but often are unable to take action on poor facility conditions. While going to sports club is healthier than going to the pub, it's still underwhelming how a club with so much potential is managed so inefficiently :/// *I was a member for a year. I would be happy to pay more, but only if the conditions are set to adequate standard. P.S. David Lloyd in Donnybrook, is the only half decent club in Dublin, double the membership price, but at least it ain't a health hazard.
Negative experience: Sauna ,steam room doesn't work properly
Negative experience: Increased every monthly subscription and lowed the temperature of the water in the pool. It’s supposed to be a headed pool, it’s now freezing! Fair enough we have an energy crisis but why increase subscription by €10 and then reduce temperatures? The jets are never working half the time.. always something broken. The smell as you enter the pool area is getting worse every day..(this needs to be looked at). This needs a full renovation as I feel dirty when I come out of there. I understand the pool is salt water but it’s always full of foamy scum and cloudy with Particles floating. I think I need to start looking for another gym, clearly management aren’t looking after the premises. Disappointing!
Fantastic experience: Best place in Dublin
Fantastic experience: I wolove to have that place under my house
Fantastic experience: This is the best WestWood I’ve ever been regarding Spa area
Fantastic experience: Outstanding gym everything you need
Fantastic experience: Visited the spa only. It has a heated seawater swimming pool. A spacious jacuzzi with hydromassage beds. Also a caldarium, sauna steam room, relaxation room. I left the place feeling a new person. Highly recommended.
Fantastic experience: Great network of gyms.
Positive experience: Great place to relax body and mind. I highly recommend the SPA and pool area.
Fantastic experience: Great gym, even when busy it's quiet.
Negative experience: SPA facilities in Clontarf branch are still closed although included in the gym membership cost. Showers are luke warm, stairway from the pool, changing rooms are drafty and cold.
Negative experience: Should not even get 1 star!!!! I am a member at Westwood clontarf and decided to come give this Westwood a chance. I came all the way from coolock just for the receptionist to tell me I don’t belong here because I’m not 18!!! I find this ridiculous as I go to all the other gyms no problem but I can’t go to this one. The receptionist should fix her attitude when talking to customers.
Fantastic experience: Great gym expensive but u get what u pay for no leisure centre at the moment coming soon so they say
Negative experience: I hate location of female gym, I saw a big group of golf guys watching women in the gym . There Glass wall before you entered the gym. So guys don't even have to be members to watch women in the gym. Manager didn't care when I said it. Very rude.
Positive experience: The blue lights is very disturbing. Not really good for relaxing.
Negative experience: unsanitary conditions
Fantastic experience: A tiny Westwood Club but provides you with everything you need. C1, C2 and the 47 bus will drop you near enough to the gym. The gym has tennis courts, a tiny weight room, a swimming pool and spa area. The swimming pool has very salty water. There's also a jacuzzi like thing on the side of the pool and gives you a nice massage. There's a steam room (which is way too loud), a sauna, a room which has heated seats, a room with seats to lie on and a nice ice pool. Changing rooms aren't the biggest but they are clean. The gym isn't that busy either.
